Choosing a framing supplier affects your budget, schedule and quality. Use these ten questions to compare steel framing suppliers and fabricators fairly.
The checklist
1. What do you actually make? Ask whether they manufacture, fabricate panels, or only resell. 2. What material standards do you meet? Ask for mill certifications and the galvanized coating class. 3. Who engineers the design? Confirm who provides stamped drawings. 4. What is your lead time? Get it in writing. 5. Can you work from BIM? 6. How are members labeled? 7. What are your delivery limits and panel sizes? 8. What is covered by warranty? 9. Can you share similar projects or references? 10. Who is my point of contact on site and in the shop?
How to use the answers
Score each supplier on the same questions and compare installed cost, not just material price. A slightly higher quote with clear labeling, fast lead time and engineering support often saves money overall. For more on pricing, read our cost guide.
Why each question matters
What do you actually make? A manufacturer, a panel fabricator and a reseller offer different control over quality and lead time. What standards do you meet? Look for material certifications, a stated galvanized coating class and clear marking on every piece. Who engineers it? Know whether stamped drawings are included or whether your engineer must supply them.
What is your lead time? Ask for the lead time from approved drawings, not from the first call. Can you work from BIM? A model-based workflow reduces field errors. How is each member labeled? Clear labels save hours during panel assembly. What are the delivery limits? Panel size is limited by trucks, cranes and site access.
What does the warranty cover? Get the scope in writing. Can you share references? Ask for projects similar in size and building type. Who is my contact? You want one named person for the shop and one for the site.
Red flags
Be cautious of quotes that exclude engineering, fasteners or delivery without saying so, vague answers about steel grade or coating, refusal to share references, and lead times that change from call to call. A very low price with unclear scope often costs more by the end of the project.
A simple way to score suppliers
| Criterion | What good looks like |
|---|---|
| Price clarity | Itemized scope with exclusions listed |
| Engineering | Stamped drawings or clear coordination with your engineer |
| Lead time | Written, with milestones |
| Quality | Certifications, labeling and inspection process |
| Support | Named contacts and fast responses |
Rate each supplier from one to five on every row and compare totals alongside installed cost.
Frequently asked questions
Should I choose the lowest bid for steel framing?
Compare scope and installed cost; the lowest material price can hide extra labor, delays or missing engineering.
