Light gauge steel projects follow a different rhythm than stick-built wood jobs, with more work done before material reaches the site. Here is the process from first drawings to a framed building.

1. Drawings and scope review

The process starts with architectural and structural drawings. The framing supplier reviews wall types, openings, heights and loads and flags anything that affects cost or buildability, such as unusual spans or conflicts with services.

2. Engineering and shop drawings

The engineer of record defines load-bearing members and connections. A detailer or fabricator produces shop drawings showing every wall panel, stud size, header and fastener schedule. Approve these carefully, because they drive production.

3. Fabrication

Steel coil is roll-formed into studs and track, punched for services and cut to length. Members are labeled and either bundled for site assembly or assembled into panels in the shop.

4. Packaging and delivery

Material is packed by sequence so the first walls needed are on top. Delivery is scheduled around site access, crane availability and storage space. Keep material off the ground and covered.

5. Installation

Crews set bottom track, stand panels or studs, brace them, and fasten with self-drilling screws or welds as detailed. Bracing and bridging are installed as the design requires, and inspections check connections before they are covered.

6. Inspection and close-out

Inspectors check members, fasteners and fire-rated assembly details against the drawings and listings. Keep photos of connections before sheathing. Related reading: prefabricated wall panels.

Frequently asked questions

How long does the steel framing process take?

It depends on size, drawing completeness and revision cycles. Approved shop drawings are the biggest schedule driver.

Who installs steel framing?

Either the supplier, a partner installer or the builder own crew; confirm this in the scope.
